LOWDOWN Winter 2010 page 4

A very Happy Christmas and a Bassetful New Year to you all!

I thought I might get away with that, but I would never short change my Basset friends - so hard luck!

It seems strange to be writing a Christmas greeting early in September, but I have a well chilled sparkling Rose for company and thoughts are coming fast, though not at present focussed on the task in hand!

Pointless meandering you may think, but our Editor is a hard taskmaster and is already compiling the December Lowdown.

Membership keeps rising and could well reach a century by the time you read this. Thanks to all of you for being such a friendly bunch and long may your interest in our Branch continue. However, we will not be complacent and as we reach our target we will simply raise the bar.

One of the most interesting events for me was to attend a committee of our parent Club with Frankie who is, of course, our Branch Representative. As usual, she presented her Branch Report and I was able to say a few words on matters concerning our branch. The Committee were receptive and the Club Chairman, Nigel Luxmoore Ball, expressed his wish to co-operate with the branches - something I know from your response to our Branch Survey you would welcome.

The Club is concerned with lofty matters such as liasing with The Kennel Club, improving the breed, revising rules, organising the Club's Shows, and dealing with complaints as well as assisting Branches with problems. All this is necessary under their Constitution and frankly we are fortunate they have much experience to call upon.

I doubt if many of us would want to dwell on those weighty matters - the meeting lasted from 11am to 5.30 pm and there was little waffle!

Put simply, the Club is the expert brain, but the Branches are its life blood. For the benefit of our hounds we need each other.

We all appreciate the value of Frankie as our representative. She kindly drove me without hesitation (over 400 miles) and it is quite a marathon. She does this several times a year for us and still keeps her cool - it’s the vision of a chilled white wine that spurs her on, and why not - well deserved!

My thanks to all our Officers and Committee for their dedication in attending virtually every committee and event, whilst the Dynamic Duo, Tony and Derek, have ensured that Lowdown and the website are a compulsive part of our lives.

Finally (hooray), a New Year’s resolution for us all to renew subscriptions promptly and to highlight the Branch walks and events in our dairies as soon as announced.

Attending will make your hounds really happy.

They will be proud of you!
