LOWDOWN Winter 2010 page 2

Hi, everyone.

Well, that year really seemed to fly by! Once again it is my great pleasure, on behalf of the officers and committee, to wish you and your wonderful hounds a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Looking back at the last twelve months, I am delighted to see how successful it has been for the Branch. Our walks and other events have been very well attended and enthusiastic new members are joining us each month. This is in very stark contrast to many other clubs and societies in these financially bleak times.

This success is down to the efforts of our very hard working committee and, indeed, you the members who are so active and determined to enjoying your hounds with like-minded friends. So well done, you.

As for editing Lowdown, I am ever grateful for the support and trust that I receive from Chairman Brian and the rest of the committee. It makes the twice-yearly task of producing this newsletter stress-free - well almost - and always very enjoyable.

In addition, I get tremendous satisfaction from your feedback. Your kind comments and messages of appreciation make it all worthwhile.

So, thank you.

I am very lucky to be sent many wonderful contributions for inclusion. As you see from this issue, there are two lovely Clara and Rolf stories from Sally King; an article about Barney from Lin Plant; an interesting account from Sue and Paul Booth about their first Basset litter; a short piece on pet bereavement sent in by Louise Swanson; and of course - what is now a regular feature - the wonderful line drawings by Sheila Williams. Several other articles are included, directly as a consequence of suggestions from Branch members.

It is with much gratitude that I publicly thank them all.

The last few years have produced many interesting issues related to Basset Hound ownership, and 2011 could to be shaping up to be similar.

I understand that the television production company that was behind the very contentious 2008 documentary, Pedigree Dogs: Exposed, is currently making a sequel. Once again our lovely breed will come under scrutiny. Though chiefly focusing on Basset Hounds in the show ring, the repercussions will affect public perception of the breed generally.

It is vital that all Basset Hound clubs and branches play their part in countering these attacks. They all have a responsibility to provide support and information to their pet owning members.

Several Branch members have inquired about the disappearance of the Basset Hound Club’s own website. It seems that the BHC’s new committee, elected earlier in the year, is experiencing some teething problems. Let us hope that for the sake of their members and the breed they can resolve this situation very soon.

This issue of Lowdown celebrates some of the Branch successes over the last six months: including our Fun Day - which lived up to its name. We also have reports of our very popular walks.

The joy of seeing so many Basset Hounds crashing around beautiful countryside never diminishes. If you have never attended one of our walks, then please give it a go - your Basset Hound will absolutely love it!

Finally, on a sad note as we look back, our condolences go to those members who have lost dear hounds and loved ones in 2010.

Looking forward with optimism to 2011.
