LOWDOWN Summer 2013 page 5
FROM THE CHAIR
BRIAN MALIN ✍

Every long standing member will remember Judy Howarth (Stringer) as an enthusiastic lover of our breed and as a very active committee member for many years.
she made all new members feel at ease and until recently hosted a walk local to her followed by aBBQ at her Shoreham-by-Sea home.
Judy was professional caterer so you can imagine what fabulous salads and desserts were provided to accompany the products of Roger’s huge brick built BBQ!
Even more than that, they were delighted to offer the hounds the freedom of their garden and even their large kitchen to the delight of our Barnaby who was probably the worst offender using his long body attempting snatch and grab raids - embarrassing to us but amusing to everyone else!
The Branch was well represented at the funeral and afterwards at our table we recalled many pleasant times spent in the company of Judy, Roger and hounds.
We will remember her and the man hounds to which she and Roger gave a loving home - not forgetting the hounds she bred and the pleasure given to their owners. Judy was known to the Shoreham Branch of the N.C.D.L. as ‘Mrs Five-Bassets’.
Being unable to walk far enough to exercise Speckles and Mollie, Roger courageously approached our Rescue Officer (Sue Sampson) and those hounds are now settled with proud new owners none more so than young Rose with Speckles.
Needless to say Roger misses their company greatly and all we can do is admire him for putting their welfare before his own. NO DECISION COULD BE HARDER. He will be seeing Speckles as she attends most walks though Mollie is more distant in Kent.
As for us, we were able to see Sue operating as Rescue Officer at first hand - so very worthwhile.
On a happier note I’m so pleased you continue to enjoy Christmas Lunch at The White Horse in Ditchling. The menu was imaginative and we packed the room pretty much to capacity.
Unfortunately, exceptional snow and ice (not us) cancelled the January walk. Historically this has never happened before - I need convincing that we need to worry about Global Warming!
The hounds would have revelled in it - trouble is with ungritted local roads making it impossible to reach main roads. Never mind, as usual there is a full schedule of events and with walks attendance averaging thirty I am confident members will want to support them. Fun Day is 18th August, so please give this priority in your diaries.
I could not have a better set of Officers and Committee to support me - they all contribute to the max. I marvel at the skills in producing Lowdown and our website (Tony and Derek) and Frankie is great at keeping us up to speed. You did well to re-elect them all with enthusiasm.
As always, though it is you the members on whom we rely and if you have any (useful) suggestions I will see they are discussed at Committee.
Enjoy the summer is we get one!
